The Undertaker’s Path to WWF Domination in 1999
The Ministry of Darkness storyline in 1999 had all the ingredients for a compelling faction arc: a darker Undertaker, a mysterious goal, and a clash of supernatural forces against corporate greed. While it delivered some memorable moments, the execution fell short. Here’s my reimagining of the Ministry’s story, structured into three distinct acts: their rise, their reign, and their ultimate fall.
Part 1: The Rise of the Ministry (December 1998 – March 1999)
The Undertaker’s Return
December 1998 sees the return of The Undertaker with a sinister new mission: to purge the WWF of corruption and seize control. Backed by The Acolytes (Farooq and Bradshaw), he begins targeting The Corporation, Vince McMahon’s dominant faction.
The Ministry abducts Stephanie McMahon during Raw, leaving Vince shaken when she’s later found unharmed. The Undertaker warns Vince: “Your empire will fall, and the Ministry will rise.”
The Acolytes ambush Corporation members like Ken Shamrock and Big Boss Man, leaving destruction in their wake.
The Royal Rumble (January 1999)
The Undertaker enters the Royal Rumble, declaring it the first step in his conquest. Vince recruits Kane into The Corporation to counter the Ministry’s growing influence.
During the Rumble, The Undertaker dominates but is eliminated by Kane after a heated brawl.
Vince McMahon wins the Rumble with help from The Rock, ensuring The Corporation retains control over the WWF Championship heading into WrestleMania 15.
The Undertaker vows revenge on Kane and declares that the Ministry’s war has only just begun.
St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (February 1999)
The Ministry escalates their attacks:
The Acolytes capture the WWF Tag Team Championships by defeating Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart.
Vince’s confidants, Pat Patterson and Gerald Briscoe, are abducted and left battered backstage as a warning.
At the PPV, Vince faces Stone Cold Steve Austin in a steel cage match, where Austin secures a WWF Championship shot at WrestleMania 15. Meanwhile, The Undertaker defeats Kane in a brutal match, with The Ministry ensuring his victory.
WrestleMania 15 (March 1999)
At WrestleMania, the Ministry and The Corporation collide:
WWF Championship Match: Stone Cold Steve Austin defeats The Rock to win the title, dealing a blow to Vince’s control. The Rock begins to grow frustrated with Vince’s leadership.
Hell in a Cell Match: The Undertaker defeats Big Boss Man in a violent encounter, leaving him incapacitated. Afterward, The Undertaker declares that his mission to dismantle The Corporation is far from over.
Part 2: The Ministry’s Reign (April – August 1999)
Backlash (April 1999)
The Undertaker defeats The Big Show, Vince’s latest enforcer, solidifying the Ministry’s dominance. Meanwhile, The Rock turns face after losing a rematch to Austin, officially leaving The Corporation.
King of the Ring (June 1999)
The Undertaker challenges Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship in a chaotic Triple Threat Match also featuring Triple H. Despite interference from both factions, The Undertaker pins Triple H after a Tombstone Piledriver to win the title.
Kane’s Betrayal Teased (July-August 1999)
July: The Undertaker successfully defends his championship against Triple H. Kane begins to exhibit signs of being influenced by The Undertaker’s dark aura, hinting at a potential shift in loyalty. Subtle moments, like Kane standing alongside Ministry members or hesitating during confrontations with The Undertaker, tease a possible betrayal of The Corporation.
SummerSlam: The Undertaker retains the title against Stone Cold Steve Austin. The simmering tension erupts as Kane betrays Vince McMahon, aligning himself with The Ministry. This shocking moment solidifies the Ministry’s grip on the WWF, leaving The Corporation in tatters.
Part 3: The Fall of the Ministry (September – November 1999)
The Hooded Figure (September 1999)
Stone Cold Steve Austin receives another rematch for the WWF Championship against The Undertaker. During the match, a hooded figure interferes, delivering a DDT to Austin and allowing The Undertaker to retain. The hooded figure begins appearing alongside The Ministry, fueling speculation about their identity.
The Higher Power Revealed (October 1999)
In a shocking segment on Raw, The Undertaker sacrifices Paul Bearer during a Ministry ritual, symbolising the consolidation of his faction. The hooded figure is revealed as Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who declares himself the mastermind behind the Ministry.
Jake cuts a chilling promo: “For too long, Vince McMahon has polluted this company with greed and corruption. The Ministry will purge the WWF, and I will be the one to lead it.”
Survivor Series (November 1999)
With control of the WWF at stake, the Ministry and The Corporation face off in a 5-on-5 elimination match.
Corporation: Mankind (replacing Austin after he’s “run over”), The Rock, Vince McMahon, The Big Show, and Triple H.
Key Moments:
Kane dominates, eliminating The Big Show and Vince, but is disqualified for excessive violence.
The Rock and Triple H eliminate The Acolytes, eventually leaving Jake Roberts and The Undertaker against The Rock and Mankind.
The Rock pins Jake with a Rock Bottom, while Mankind uses the Mandible Claw on The Undertaker, securing the win for Team Corporation.
Aftermath:
The Undertaker disappears, and the WWF Championship is vacated.
Vince McMahon regains control of the WWF, and The Corporation reforms.
The company transitions into Triple H’s rise to the WWF Championship, but the Ministry’s legacy as one of the most dominant factions remains.
Final Thoughts
This reimagined Ministry of Darkness storyline gives The Undertaker and his faction a year of dominance, culminating in an epic power struggle with The Corporation. By weaving in Jake Roberts as the Higher Power and teasing Kane’s betrayal, the story creates compelling twists while elevating The Undertaker and his allies to new heights.
